Russian lyrics from Cocciante's musical (translated) Empty Russian lyrics from Cocciante's musical (translated)

Post by Hermelinda Sun 24 Nov - 16:29

A big thanks to Hugos for this whole translation !

1. Time of cathedral churches (Le temps des cathedrales)

The time has come, the hour has struck
We start our story
About life, death and love
Just as it was in our days
History keeps its diary
And every century, every year
Brings into its (History's) chronicle
Its own legend

The time of cathedral churches has come
(The time of) Proud crosses
Reaching to the sky
Great century of ingenious discoveries
Time of passions
Shaking the hearts

And you, artist and trubadour
Maker of paintings and sculptures
(You're) endowed with an extraordinary gift:
(Ability) to recreate the face of the time
And even if you're rejected and forgotten
Your song is always heard
And with it revieve
The legends of our days (Yes, it should be "the legends of our days revieve", in Russian you can usually change the order of the words without changing the meaning of the whole sentence. So if there are more than one line of the song, I'll keep the orginal order)

The time of cathedral churches has come
(The time of) Black fires
For burning hearts
Time of threatening and fatal events
Century of cathastrophes
Century of killers and creators

The time of pirates and poets has come
(The time of) Grim feasts
Bloody carnivals
The time of sunsets and sunrises has come
(The time of) Days and nights
For sufferings and for love

Tomorrow's century will replace the yesterday's one (the word 'vyek' means not only 'century=100 years' but also 'a period of time', so this line means simply 'the future will replace the past')
(It) Will come and go again
The horde of new barbarians (inversion again)
The towers will rise and fall again
But the song of love
Will never fall silent!

2. Vagabonds (Les sans-papiers)

We're people without papers - a crowd of vagabonds
We can't find a place to stay
Open your doors for us, oh Notre Dame!
Let us in! Let us in!

We're people without papers - a crowd of vagabonds
We can't find a place to stay
Open your doors for us, oh Notre Dame!
Let us in! Let us in!

Above our heads we have only the sky
No roof, no warmth - the fate has taken all
Who will help us? Only the God's temple
Let us in! Let us in!

We're people without papers - a crowd of vagabonds
We can't find a place to stay
Open your doors for us, oh Notre Dame!
Let us in! Let us in!

You're so fair, Paris! You sleep and drink so sweetly (unsure)
And we're standing at the gates like worthless animals
But we'll risk everything (lit. 'we'll go on everything' - it's an idiom that can have various meanings, I'm not sure this is the best one here) And we'll take what's ours!
And we'll take what's ours!
We'll take!

We're crowd of vagabonds - where to go?
Without papers we can't go anywhere
We're crowd of vagabonds - where to go?
Without papers we can't go anywhere
Without papers we can't go anywhere
We're people without papers - a crowd of vagabonds
We can't find a place to stay
We're people without papers - a crowd of vagabonds
We're people without papers - a crowd of vagabonds
We can't find a place to stay
No roof, no warmth - where to go?
We can't find a place to stay
Oh Notre Dame - you're a God's temple
Let us in! Let us in!

We'll risk everything - Oh Notre Dame!
And we'll find a place of our own - Oh Notre Dame!
Open your doors for us, oh Notre Dame!
Let us in! Let us in! Let us in! Let us in!

3. Frollo's intervention

Frollo:
Mr Phoebus de Chateaupers, capitain of the archers
Chase these vagabonds off the gates, immediately
The dances of this Gypsy girl and the choir surrounding her
Are disturbing the peace of people of Paris and disgracing the church

Phoebus:
Archdeacon, no need of words
There's a directive for these animals (he uses the word 'skot' lit. cows&bulls, offensive)
To chase them away!
We don't need such guests!

4. Esmeralda's dance
(orginally it was part of the previous song, I have no idea why Russians count this as a separate one)
Phoebus:
Who are you, miraclous child?
Who are you and where are you from?
What kind of fate has thrown
Here a bird from Paradise?

5. Gypsy girl (Bohemienne)

A long time ago I've heard
That in Andalusia, in the moutains
Whole my family is wandering
Riding the stolen horses
There, in Andalusia, in the moutains

Now Paris is my country
And I like it (lit. it has come to my soul)
About myself, I know only
That I was born one day
There, in Andalusia, in the moutains

Gypsy daughter - I don't remember my fatherland
Gypsy daughter - the road is all my family
Gypsy daughter, gypsy daughter - I sing in every language
Gypsy daughter, gypsy daughter - I can read palm

Give me your hand and I'll tell you
Who are you, where are you from
And what is in life
Judged for you (inversion)
But don't touch my hand
Don't ask me to look at it
The ability to read my own palm
Wasn't given to me

And even if
My fate
Predicts me poverty
Let it be!
And I will always
Fly away
Where my soul wants

Gypsy daughter - my arms are two free wings
Gypsy daughter - hot wind is in my blood
Gypsy daughter, gypsy daughter - my song is always happy
Gypsy daughter, gypsy daughter - my song is always about love

6. Esmeralda, understand (Esmeralda, tu sais)

Clopin:
Esmeralda, understand
That you became different
Than you were in the age of eight
When you became an orphan
On my side, year after year
You have grown like a flower
Knowing no worries
No misfortunes, no dismays

Esmeralda:
I have blessed you
And I have been happy
Among wandering crowd
Of the vagabonds, my brothers

Clopin:
But understand, that now
Men are looking at you
Not like
One looks at a child.
For an inexperienced soul
That falls into their web
There is nothing more
Nothing more...

Esmeralda:
And nothing more...

7. My love (Ces diamants-la)

Fleur:
My 15 years are for you
My sleepless sunrise is for you
There's no greater happiness for me than the secret
That I hide, ... (after the comma there's a word 'lyubya', probably something with 'love', but dunno what)

Phoebus
The world of your smile is for me
All your beauty is for me
The shining of (your) dear eyes is 100 times
More bright than the moonlight

Fleur:
You've conquered my heart
Beloved fiance
Brave owner
Of all my thoughts

Phoebus:
All I think about is
How with a sacred oath
With you, before the altar
The hearts will unite

Fleur:
My love is with you

Phoebus:
For ever

Fleur:
Don't think about the other (women)

Phoebus:
Never

Fleur:
Soon me and you, my dear
Will tell each other 'yes'

Phoebus:
The treasures of whole earth
Hidden in the depths
One moment of love
That you'll give me is worth them
(Aww, again inversion 'moment of love is worth the treasures', hope you get it)

Fleur:
I don't want poems
Nor love songs
Only the woice from the dreams
Only call (unsure)

Both:
My love is with you
For ever
Don't think about the other (women)
Never
Soon me and you, my angel
Will tell each other 'yes'

8 - Ball of fools (La fete des fous)
(they use the word 'shut' that meand 'jester', 'fool', 'clown' and is not used normally as 'idiot' or 'someone stupid')

You're - a fool - I'm - a fool
Everything - here - is for - fools
You're - a fool - I'm - a fool
Everything - here - is for - fools

I invite you, mesdames, messieurs, (yup, he speaks French here!) here, to the ball of fools
Where acting fool befits and I'm always ready!

You're - a fool - I'm - a fool
Everything - here - is for - fools
You're - a fool - I'm - a fool
Everything - here - is for - fools

Today's ball of fools, common feast of whole town
I'm only the leader and we need a king
And the king crowned in this very moment
The one who makes a face better than all others will be (inversion again)

You're - a fool - I'm - a fool
Everything - here - is for - fools
The one who makes a face better than all others
He will be our king!

You're - a fool - I'm - a fool

You're - a fool - I'm - a fool
Everything - here - is for - fools
We - I - he - you
Everyone - here - are - fools
You're - a fool - I'm - a fool
Everything - here - is for - fools

Pardonnez, messieurs, mesdames, who's that over there?
Won't we take him? Is he not our king?

He's - ours - he's - a fool
Like - we - all - here!
Hump-backed and askew young hunk - Quasimodo!
We've chosen him, we've chosen him - he's our king! (more accurate would be French 'Voici notre roi')
We've chosen him, we've chosen him - Quasimodo!
He's our king!

9. King of fools (Le pape des fous)

I'm the king
And he will be punished (inversion)
That would say at least one time
'Hump-backed Quasimodo'.
Only for an hour
But I'm a king!
And during this hour when I can do everything
I'd like to ask Esmeralda one thing:
Could you fall in love with me?
Tell me

She doesn't look, she doesn't care
That it's not 'nobody' standing in front of her
But the king himself!
King of the fools!
King of the fools!

10. The witch (La sorciere)

Frollo:
Quasimodo, I take you away and for the future
I forbid you to look at the witch
She should be caught and kept away from all
So that she wouldn't bring men to sin
She's a wild cat, an evil spirit
These hands, lithe body
Her steps, her eyes -
It's all just illusion, personification of evil
Of evil!
We'll catch her, bellringer, and lock her in the tower
There she will atone for her sins day and night
And maybe one day
The Holy Virgin will pity her

Quasimodo:
Whatever
You order, you tell, it means it must be
What you order, what you tell, as you say
It means it must be so
It means it must be so

11. The foundling (L'enfant trouve)

You have adopted me
(Took me) from the streets (lit. cobbles)
Where I was abandoned
By my own family
Like the last dog (lit. 'pup', but in English it doesn't have such a negative meaning)
You feed me and helped me
And saved me!

Since then Notre Dame
Is my only home.
You taught me
And made me bellringer.
Forever you will be for me
My parents, my relatives
You're everything!

You taught me
To read and write
But, to be honest
Sometimes I don't understand you

I am your dog
Your child
And if you tell me to,
I'll do everything!

I am your faithful dog
Your child
And if you tell me to,
I'll do everything!

12. Paris (Les portes de Paris)

Paris...
What a night
It's so silent
But it's only
An illusion
And I can hear
Passionate moans and cries and laughter in this darkness
And your music
Makes me drunk, oh Paris! (not the best translation... he's drinking in the music, I mean)
Land of mad desires!

Here
In the crowd I noticed
A beautiful angel, light of Heaven
I followed him all night
But he disappeared

Paris!
He's somewhere here,
Where sin and lust,
Where laughter and cry
He's here
In your night
Oh my town - I'm yours forever

13. Failed kidnap attempt (Tentative d'enlevement)
(BTW Maybe you've noticed, in Russian they shortened Phoebus' name into 'Feb'. I'll keep the orginal one here)

Phoebus:
Get the bellringer!
The prison awaits him
Poor hunchback
He's driven mad by lust

I'm capitain Phoebus
I've captured the ruffian
It is my duty
To protect peaceful people of Paris

If you wish, I'll see you out
To the Gypsy's camp.
By night, alone,
You won't reach your home

Esmeralda:
I'm not afraid
Neither of ruffians nor of soldiers
Night and the knife
Will protect me, more or less

Phoebus:
Please
Come tomorrow in the evening
To the cabaret
Named "Abode of love"

Esmeralda:
To the cabaret "Abode of love"

Gringoire:
To the cabaret "Abode of love"

Frollo:
To the cabaret "Abode of love"

14. The court of miracles (La cour des miracles)

Clopin:
I've always wanted to tell you
That we're all here brothers and sisters
We don't need Hell nor Paradise
We've got everything we need
Food, drink
And a posh palace - our home the court of miracles!

Night and day a happy chorus can be heard
Here at the court of miracles, here at the court of miracles
Open nation - vagabond, whore, thief
Here at the court of miracles, here at the court of miracles
They dance and sing by the sweat of their brow
Here at the court of miracles, here at the court of miracles
And the gallow awaits each of them
Here at the court of miracles, here at the court of miracles
Here at the court of miracles, here at the court of miracles

We are all one blood
No ranks, no dignities
And what's the color of one's skin:
We don't care!
Our credo is: (lit. our faith)
Steal as much as you can and drink as much as you can!

Oh my God, here everyone's his own master
Here at the court of miracles, here at the court of miracles
Everyone fits if he can steal and drink
Here at the court of miracles, here at the court of miracles
Jew or Gypsy, normal or psycho
Here at the court of miracles, here at the court of miracles
We're 'all ours', we don't need anyone ('wsye svai'=lit.'all ours' is an idiom that means all of them know and trust each other)
Here at the court of miracles, here at the court of miracles
Here at the court of miracles, here at the court of miracles

Poet Gringoire!
What devil told you to poke your nose here, where we don't want strangers?
You must be a spy!

Chorus:
He must be a spy!

Gringoire:
And here spies are hanged!

Clopin:
But if
One of our friends (female) takes you for a husband
Live long years!

Chorus:
Live long years!

Gringoire:
But who needs a poet in France?! (that line makes me giggle grin)

Clopin:
And you, beautiful Esmeralda, look:
Wouldn't you want to marry a ministrel?
Answer quickly!

Esmeralda:
As they say: if one gives, I take

Gringoire:
Bless you, God!

Esmeralda:
But don't expect me to love you as a husband

Clopin & chorus:
Night and day a happy chorus can be heard
Here at the court of miracles, here at the court of miracles
Open nation - vagabond, whore, thief
Here at the court of miracles, here at the court of miracles
They dance and sing by the sweat of their brow
Here at the court of miracles, here at the court of miracles
And the gallow awaits each of them
Here at the court of miracles, here at the court of miracles
Here at the court of miracles, here at the court of miracles

15. The word Phoebus (Le mot Phoebus)

Esmeralda:
You, whom I took for a husband,
What will you tell me about yourself?

Gringoire:
I'm Gringoire, eulogist of Paris
Like Homer, nothing less

Esmeralda:
I see that you're better taught than I.

Gringoire:
I'm well-taught, educated
I know all secrets of science.
How can I help you?

Esmeralda:
If you read all this
You must have come across the Phoebus' name
Explain it to me

Gringoire:
When we talk about shining Phoebus
We talk about the sun in the sky

Esmeralda:
The sun means the same as Phoebus

Gringoire:
Voila an idea for a poet! (forgive me, but Russian 'vot' and French 'voila/voici' is practically the same, while I can't find a proper word in English)
Whose name is it?

Esmeralda:
Sun and Phoebus are one

16. Sun of life (Beau comme le soleil)

Esmeralda:
Sun of (my) life - shining Phoebus!
Tell me, my beloved
From what beautiful fairy tale
Have you appeared in front of me?
You are the star of my night
Son of enchanted kings (or 'magic'?)
My prince, my prince

Fleur:
Sun of (my) life - shining Phoebus!
You're my knight, my hero
Hot captivity of your arms
Is like my sweetest dream.
Happiness is in every moment
I spent in your arms
Oh my hero!

Both:
Sun of (my) life - shining Phoebus!
How did I live without you?
My whole soul is full of you
Now you are my destiny
Come near, embrace me
Take me totally, entirely
Sun of (my) life - shining Phoebus!
With me forever!...

Russian lyrics from Cocciante's musical (translated) Empty Re: Russian lyrics from Cocciante's musical (translated)

Post by Hermelinda Sun 24 Nov - 16:37

17. What to do? (Dechire)
(the title phrase 'kak mnye byt'' is bloody difficult to translate; it's something like 'how for_me to_be', 'how should I be' and 'be' is more in the meaning of 'exist', 'live'; I think here he's asking how he should behave or what he should do in this cartain situation. Just be aware this is not 100% fitting translation).

What to do?
My heart hurts and tears itself apart
What to do?
I fell in love with two (women)
I can't live without them
Nor without any of them
I can't live

What to do?
What is left for me?
How should I live? (here he uses exactly the word 'zhyt''='to live')
I won't tear myself in two
I won't renounce
But to fake all the time -
Impossible! (inversion)

With the first one
I'll spend all my life
With the second one
I forget everything
My choice:
Either warmth and light (the word 'swyet'='ligth' can also mean 'world')
Or fire and suffering
There's no choice!

What to do?
What will I tell her?
How should I live?
Where's that union of hearts,
Two golden rings,
And one day
Maybe even crown (he means marriage - in the orthodox Russian churches marriage ceremony the bride and groom are crowned by the priest; yes, I copied this from 'Down to earth')

But like a firebolt
Is the dance of simple Gypsy girl (inversion)
Like a dream
Her eyes
Her words
My heart burns
What a fate!

Light and darkness
Beguile me at the same time
Sin and marriage
Sweet honey and Hell
Who could
Have it all
And keep his soul?
I can't!

What to do?
I lie to them both
How should I live?
I tell the first one
The same as I tell the second one:
That I love her
And I'm not lying!

What to do?
What is left for me?
How should I live?
I won't tear myself in two
I won't renounce
But to fake all the time -
Impossible! (inversion)

What to do?
How should I live?

What to do?
My heart hurts and tears itself apart
What to do?
I fell in love with two (women)
I can't live without them
Nor without any of them
I can't live

What to do?
How should I live?
What to do?

Russian lyrics from Cocciante's musical (translated) Empty Re: Russian lyrics from Cocciante's musical (translated)

Post by Hermelinda Sun 24 Nov - 16:38

18. АNAГKH

Frollo:
Who is this girl who dares to dance before Notre Dame?

Gringoire:
She's my wife, married before the Gypsy baron

Frollo:
And have you sinned with her, damning your soul?

Gringoire:
Not even in my dreams! (he uses an idiom, I'm not sure if I understood it correctly)

Frollo:
I forbid you!

Gringoire:
I wanted to ask you something: this writing on the wall
Could you translate it for me?
What does 'ananke' mean?

Frollo:
In Greek 'ananke' means 'destiny's will'

Gringoire:
Is poor bellringer punished by ananke?

Frollo:
He ran after a girl and got caught by the guards
And he's been sentenced to disgrace!

19. Water (A boire)

Chorus:
Crippled hunchback! Askew creature!
Disguisting devil! Mean animal!

Frollo:
He couldn't fight his temptation
God, forgive him

Quasimodo:
God, forgive me, forgive me
And help me, help me
In this miserable hour
Let someone give me water
What to do, whom to ask
Who would give Quasimodo something to drink
Water!
Give me water!
Water!
Water!
Give me water!

You, you...

Russian lyrics from Cocciante's musical (translated) Empty Re: Russian lyrics from Cocciante's musical (translated)

Post by Hermelinda Sun 24 Nov - 16:38

20. Belle

Quasimodo:
Light has lit up my sick soul
No, I won't disturb your peace with my passion
Delirium
Midnight delirium tears my heart again
Oh Esmeralda
I dared to desire you
My heavy cross of ugliness is an eternal stamp
I'm willing to accept suffering for love
No
The hated hunchback with a curse upon his face
I'll never be happy on this earth
And after my death I will not find peace
I'll sell my soul to the devil for a night with you

Frollo:
Paradise
Your embraces promise paradise
Give me hope, oh, my curse
Know, that the sweet and blind domination of sinful thoughts (has overtaken me)
A madman before, I never knew the meaning of passion
The whorish girl has possessed me like a demon
This bold gypsy has destroyed my life
Alas, fate has played a joke and condemned me to this priest's robe
I am damned to eternal hellish suffering
And after my death I will not find peace
I'll sell my soul to the devil for a night with you

Phoebus:
A dream, the light dream of my happiness, Esmeralda
Moan, of sinful desire, is my Esmeralda
It broke from my lips and rolled downward like a stone
The heart of the blonde Fleur-de-Lys broke
O Holy Virgin, you can't to help me
I'm not meant to escape this forbidden love
Stay, don't leave me to my mad dream
Beauty turns a man into a slave
And after my death I will not find peace
I'll sell my soul to the devil for a night with you

All:
And day and night, I see only her before me
And I don't pray to the Madonna, but to her alone
Stay, don't leave me to my mad dream
Beauty turns a man into a slave
And after my death I will not find peace
I'll sell my soul to the devil for a night with you
For a night with you

21. My home is your home (Ma maison c'est ta maison)

Quasimodo:
Esmeralda, come with me, please
Don't be afraid of the gargoyles - they are our friends
If suddenly a storm or trouble comes
Come here - they will protect you
Voila my Notre Dame, our great church
Here is my home, my teple and strict prison
It's open for you any time of day and night
In the shadow of it's walls you have nothing to fear

Esmeralda:
Gargoyles don't frighten me, I'm not afraid of them
They're funny and amusing, they chase off the sadness
I like you because you ressemble them
It's snug here with you like among friends

Quasimodo:
Voila my Notre Dame, here it's always beautiful
Warm in the winter, cool in the summer
It's my family home - you'll like it (lit. you'll become friends with it)
And you can always call it yours

If a storm or trouble comes
Don't run away anywhere - come here

Both:
Voila my/your Notre Dame, here it's always beautiful
Warm in the winter, cool in the summer
It's my/your family home - you/I will like it
And you/I can always call it yours

22. Ave Maria (Ave Maria paien)

Ave Maria
Forgive me
I've never prayed before in my life
Ave Maria
In your house I stand before you
Ave Maria
I fell in love
And my love is so great
I worry about it

Ave Maria
It was your Son who said that men are brothers
Ave Maria
Let it be so
In the face of love and God's judgement
All men in the world are equal

Ave Maria
I believe that you have sent him
Ave Maria
Ave Maria
Protect our life and love
Ave Maria

23. If you could see in my soul (orginally: Je sens ma vie qui bascule; later: Si tu pouvais voir en moi)

Quasimodo:
If she could look
To the depth of the soul, to the bottom
Of all who swear to her
She would believe only
My love, only mine

23. You are my perdition (Tu vas me detruire)

There's no point in praying
I made the Heavens angry
There's a abyss before me
And I'm standing on the limb of it
I feel sweet and bitter
Whatever will be, let it be
But it'll be only that
She will destroy(*) me

You are my perdition(*) x2
And there's no salvation, no forgiveness for me
You are my perdition(*) x2
And there are no regrets in me
Only despair
You are my perdition(*) x3

In my dreams and in daytime
All the time I imagine
Myself kissing you
Caressing you
That fragile elbow
That white knee...
Oh, desire, desire, desire
Stronger than fire in Hell

You are my perdition(*) x2
And there's no salvation, no forgiveness for me
You are my perdition(*) x2
And there are no regrets in me
Only despair
You are my perdition(*) x3

I though that the voice of the flesh
I have silenced for eternity (inversion)
And now I'm burning like powder
And melting like a candle
I'm raising my hands
For a horrible curse
And I'm stretching them out
For passionate embrace

You are my perdition(*) x2
And there's no salvation, no forgiveness for me
You are my perdition(*) x2
And there are no regrets in me
Only despair
You are my perdition(*) x3
No salvation
No forgiveness
You are my perdition(*)

(*Verb "pagubit'" and noun "gibel" are damn difficult to translate. One girl I met on YT translated "gibel" as "death", but it doesn't show the whole meaning of the word. "Gibel" is somebody/something that makes one lost, lost for eternity, damned (I think the French word "perdu" would fit here perfectly). "Pagubit'" means 'make someone lost/damned/perdu' so "destroy" is not the best choice. Hope you understand...)

25. The shadow (L'ombre)

Phoebus:
Who goes there?
Who's following me
Creeping like a shadow,
A incorporeal, misty ghost?

Listen to me, ghost:
Why are you following me,
Creeping like a shadow?
You're an enemy or a friend?

Tell me, ghost,
Who are you?
Why, ghost,
Are you following me?

Frollo:
I am your destiny
You're between two fires (dunno if there's such a phrase in English, but in Russian 'between two fires' means 'in a very difficult/serious situation')
Don't go there
Forget the way to her
And know this:
It seems to me thet you'll end your life very quickly in this fire

Phoebus:
Out of my way!
Don't make me angry!
Either you're the worst devil
Or God's servant -
But this night
She's mine!
Mine!

26. Abode of Love (Val d'amour)

Gringoire:
In Paris there's a certain place (not exactly 'place'... he uses the word 'chram' that means some type of 'sacred place' and is usually translated as 'temple')
Not Sacre Coeur, not Notre Dame
Place for many Parisians
And for visitors.
Day and night they come here:
Snob, peasant, buster, rich guy
Our wonderful cabaret, we're all yours,
Oh 'Abode of Love' cabaret!

Abode of Love, Abode of Love
Here day and night they bow
Up and down, forward and backward (nope, I don't get it)
What passion, what fire
All for a penny, not more than three
You'll get whole bouquet of love!
Oh, these sinful flowers!
Oh, those tender labors!
Embraces of vipers, eyes of chimers
Blissful paradise of night goddess
Day and night, we're all yours,
Oh 'Abode of Love' cabaret!

Hear me, Amor
I'm your troubadour
Give us all pleasures
Of incessant love!

We're your admirers,
Oh 'Abode of Love' cabaret!
We're your worshipers,
Oh 'Abode of Love' cabaret!
And who'll forgive us our sins?
Notre Dame is always there!

Phoebus:
Hello, pretty girls, about time!
But I haven't come here to you
Though here, among friends
I have found a habitat for my love.
Yesterday, by the moonlight, the Gypsy
Predicted me happiness (or 'luck')
Iand now I'm waiting for her
To try out my luck

Gringoire:
We're your admirers,
Oh 'Abode of Love' cabaret!
We're your worshipers,
Oh 'Abode of Love' cabaret!
Let them all came her
To spend the time - just let them know the price!
'Abode of Love', you deceive us
Your love is just foolish illusion
Cheap night mascarade
Where everyone likes to be deceived
All our live, against reason
We believe these shadows, fools!
Oh 'Abode of Love' cabaret!
Oh 'Abode of Love' cabaret!

27. Pleasure (La volupte)

Phoebus:
My happiness, I love you!
How I waited for this moment - I adore you!
There's nobody except us on the earth now
Oh by divine angel!
Your eyes - there's light and fire in them!
I want to burn in one fire with you

Esmeralda:
The fate told me
To love you
I want to burn in one fire with you
Come
And take me, my dear!

Phoebus:
Whole my life! Whole my life I've been coming to you!

Esmeralda:
Oh Phoebus!

Phoebus:
Esmeralda!

28. Destiny's will (Fatalite)

Destiny's will!
Allmighty and powerful
Destiny's will!
It's ruthless
Destiny's will!
Vagabonds and nobles
Destiny's will!
We're all nothing against it
Destiny's will!
We're all it's slaves!
Destiny's will!
Destiny's will!
Destiny's will!

29. Florence

FROLLO
Tell me, poet
What does "Renaissance" mean
And what they are talking about
In the world and here?

GRINGOIRE
They say that the earth is round
Like the moon
And that there are lands
Which we don't know

The ships are sailing to find America
And the maps of the world have to be drawn once again

FROLLO
Luther will rewrite insolently the New Testament
The society is threatened by an unheard-of schism

GRINGOIRE
They say, that has been invented
the great printing machine (inversion)

FROLLO
And Europe will be flooded
by a solid river of papers

GRINGOIRE
Rain of pamphlets and tracts
Gale of ideas and satires

BOTH
It's a new deluge
which will sweep off ewerything

GRINGOIRE
It's a new deluge - deluge of knowledge and feelings
It will rise the word above all arts

FROLLO
It's a new deluge - deluge of dubious words
And everything will fall - church, God and cross

The hour will struck for everything

BOTH
The world is changing - there will be unprecedented works
We will fly to the stars - and that's not enough
And in our pride we will forget about God
We will ruin the old church and create a new myth

The hour will struck for everything
The hour will struck for everything

30. The bells (Les cloches)

Gringoire:
It's silent in the church - the bells's song fell silent
Quasimodo is sad, Quasimodo is in love

Frollo:
It's been three days since he hasn't been ringing the bells
Quasimodo is sad, he's mad

Both:
There's no escape from love!

Quasimodo:
My home - my Notre Dame
Is a huge house - ... ('komu kuda' lit. 'who where', I don't get it)
And I'm going to you
To my friends, the bells
All (my?) life - despite rain
Despite thunders, despite hail
They always sing
Always are heard, always ring

They ring for birth, they ring for christening,
Morning and night they ring
They ring for prayer, they ring for battle
And for all holidays they ring still
Bell for Epiphany, bell for Easter
Christmas, Annunciation, St. Valentine
They don't stop, they don't sleep - every day
Funeral, choir
When we wake up, when we go
When we come and when we go away
Bell's metal keeps resounding
To remember about God, or there'll be misfortune (or troubles)
Even the one who's deaf or whose soul is ill
And he wallows in grief
On Creator's order they will shake his heart,
Sound of the bells, song of the bells

Here are they, here are they - my three belowed
Those who raised (lit. fed) me - all called Marie
Little Marie bids farewell to the children
Big Marie - their fathers and mothers
And great Marie greets the young couples
There's so much happiness in their eyes,
That I can't look at them

Because they look at each other
Like nobody on this world ever looked at me
Because they embrace each other
Like nobody on this world ever embraced me
So ring, my friends, don't be silent
Ring in the name of your bellringer
So as, wherever she's hidden now,
Esmeralda could hear my heart!

My metal choir resounds
All over the world - it can be heard everywhere
I want that whole world
Knew that I love!
Let my choir resound, let the bells resound!

31. Where is she? (Ou est-elle?)

Frollo:
Gringoire, where's your wife?
She hasn't been dancing here for long

Gringoire:
You are an archdeacon, I'm a poet
We've got nothing to to with the Gypsies
Let us forget about them. Let us pray to our gods:
I to the Muses - you to Christ

Frollo:
Where is she - where is Esmeralda?
Paris without her is like an abandoned house

Gringoire:
Far away - behind dark walls
Where her witchcraft can harm only her.

Frollo:
Tell me the truth, poet!
Your speak is so clouded (lit. dark)
Simply tell me where
Is she impisoned?

Clopin:
Where is she - where is Esmeralda?
Court of miracles without her is like an abandoned house

Gringoire:
Far away - behind a solid lock
She's like a bird with cut wing
She's in La Sante prison
If you don't help her - she will be executed

Clopin:
She won't be executed

All:
Where is she - where is Esmeralda?
The streets of Paris are hollow without her
Far away - behind a solid lock
She's like a bird with cut wing
